Remember, in a neutral your feet are at a 45. This doesn’t change no matter where the neutral is. So, when you’re doing a neutral to 12, your feet are pointing to either 10:30, or 1:30. If you’re doing a neutral to 10:30, your feet point to either 12 or 9.
This is a source of confusion to many students, they get used to shifting their feet, and do it even when they don’t need to. For instance… in techniques like Deflecting Hammer, and Thrusting Salute, you step to the 45. You are in a neutral to either 10:30, or 1:30 in these techniques. You are already facing 12 when you begin the technique, so there is no reason to shift your feet. They stay facing 12. This will make the technique not only easier, but also just a hair quicker. Without having to shift your feet, you should be able to concentrate on the technique at hand.
